Summary: Year 2122. After many years of failed attempts, medical science is finally able to bring back to life a cryonised patient. The researcher who performed the procedure does not understand what made this particular attempt successful. We follow the patient’s recollection of her first experiences in the Afterlife, as she is sharing them with the researcher. The first area of the Afterlife looks like a forest. It is a transitional place before the place of actual death. Unity’s Demo Team, creators of the acclaimed short film Adam (Winner, Webby Award 2016; Official Selection, Annecy, Nashville Film Festival, Short Shorts Film Festival Asia) are presenting Book of the Dead, a boldly innovative production at the cross-section of film and interactive experience. The third realtime-cinematic project by director Veselin Efremov and producer Silvia Rasheva, Book of the Dead explores and expands the process of realtime filmmaking. It has won the Webby People’s Choice Award 2018 and is part of the official selection of SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival 2018. This is a project with an immersive narrative created with the groundbreaking technique of realtime filmmaking. The storytelling is interactive, letting the audience take control over the progression of the story, but at the same time it is maintaining the aesthetics and high standards we are used to in conventional filmmaking. It is not only breaking ground for a more time- and cost-efficient film production, but more importantly contributes to the evolution of the filmic experience. Filmmakers are now starting to tell their stories in a completely new way - empowering the spectators with a “free will”, letting their choices effect storytelling and thereby opening a pandoras box that is full of uncharted and unexplored cinematic tools that will eventually redefine form and content of what we today call film.

Summary: The Short Film "Booxze" is a student project which was produced and developed during a workshop at the Animationsinstitut of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. This special and unique workshop is a chance for 15 students to work together. The students are coming from three different departments: Animation, Set Design (third semester) and Camera (seventh semester). The workshop was a great chance for students to learn how different departments work and to get in touch with new technologies, such as the ncam-system. Most of the students have never been working on a project with green screen and digital set extension. The new experience of building a world not only in the studio, but also to extend it digitally was a big challenge for every department. Within one month the participants had to develop the whole story, as well, as finishing the pre-production and set building. The one-day shooting of the movie has taken place in a studio with green-screen and real set buildings. Afterwards the postproduction started. Most of the animation students worked as 2D artists before and learned Maya and Nuke from scratch within in the post-production time. In just four month six animation students had to finish the 18 VFX shots in the movie.

Summary: There is a world in which an endless rain of dark ash fills the sky, and covers the earth. Humanity, fearing the ash that burns and melts away human flesh, has no choice but to cover themselves in protective suits, and their faces with gigantic masks. This is the story of the children in this fearful world, this is "COCOLORS". The hand-drawn animation style gives "Cocolors" a unique look and there is a great level of details in both characters and backgrounds. The design of the suits and the world itself draws on a steam-punk aesthetic, with machinery and trailing wires, a large fan that is presumably purifying the air. Very few things about the world are explained, but if you look closely you can understand a lot about how the society functions. The film uses digital computer animation to give characters and objects a three-dimensional feel and there is a palpable weight and solidity to everything. A color palette largely consisting of browns, yellows and greys beneath the ground, and almost entirely of black and white above ground, helps bring to life this post-apocalyptic world, where almost all vibrancy and life has been eradicated. The music likewise relies on very limited instrumentation. In terms of the movie production technique, this movie tries to resurrect the Japanese traditional painting techniques: woodcut print and “ukiyoe”, by 3DCG animation. It is loved beyond the time, such as ingenuity of directing born by imposing restrictions to use only limited "color", expression expressing circumstance change by using delicate color difference repeatedly using the same cut We are actively incorporating the depth of traditional painting.

Summary: A series of short films featuring a digital actor with the likeness of Albert Einstein. The results are an artistic interpretation of Albert Einstein reappearing in contemporary context citing some of his famous quotes. This homage to the physicist and humanist further investigates how documentary film formats can extend their horizon by meaningful inclusion of digital actors. The creation process relied on a set of specialized tools which reduced the labor effort significantly. This film with full of different shapes and forms of life wouldn’t provide one single conclusion to the audience. We are encouraged to watch the film numerous times and find new elements, questions and answers every time. On a side note, ’How to paint your Rainbow’ is a sequel to Erick’s previous film ‘How to eat your Apple (2012)’.

Summary: "Out of the Cradle" is a documentary employing CG, that showcases the latest academic theories pertaining to the birth of mankind. Our studio-through video game and movie development experience-has cultivated the technical expertise by which we were able to provide entertaining and stunning visuals. As with most academic studies, it can be difficult to imagine ancient settings. Based on the latest anthropological research, we added our own highly entertaining visual expressions to these theories, to create an engaging documentary, that is unlike no other. We hope you can catch a glimpse into the world of ages past through this film, contemplate on the most recent academic theories on human evolution.
